History

The History of Mount Calvary

In 1840, the first black church, Saint James African United Methodist Protestant Church was formed. Afterward, Mount Olive Baptist Church was established. One year after the building of Mt. Olive Baptist Church the original edifice of Mt. Calvary was built.The building of Mount Calvary began in 1855, when a group of Christians incorporated to plan a new place of worship. Prior to the building of our church, our members worshipped in a hall down in the grove (the park area of the Relief Association Hall). On February 12, 1889 our present day site was purchased from the Relief Association of Baltimore County for $50.00. The minister and trustees who signed the original deed were Rev. Hammond, pastor, James J. Smith, president and the trustees who were Isaac Robinson, Lewis Chaney, James H. Garrett, Benjamin Johnson, John Wesley Smith, Phillip W. Meyers, Henry Mack and Alfred Black. Other founders were Emma Smith and Aaron Stewart. At the formation of the church, we were known as the Mount Calvary Methodist Protestant Church of Baltimore County.Although our church was originally a Protestant denominational church, the African Methodist Episcopal Conference was requested to provide preachers for our pulpit. A gentlemens agreement was made between our church and the A.M.E. Conference. The A.M.E. Conference supplied preachers to Mt. Calvary with the stipulation that the church assumed all financial obligations for the church.In 1968, under the leadership of Rev. Reginald Boston, our original sanctuary was totally destroyed by fire. After the fire, Rev. Boston moved Mount Calvarys congregation to the First Lutheran Church onBurke Avenue in Towson. The former sanctuary was erected under Rev. Bostons leadership.In 1973 Rev. Reginald Boston was appointed to Grace A.M.E. Church, and Rev. William Gray III became pastor of Mount Calvary. Rev. Gray led Mt. Calvary in accomplishing many improvements and financial goals such as: central air conditioning, a new chancel, added piece of property, a new dining area and Sunday School room, new pews and the churches debt freedom from major expenses.As a result of the A.M.E. Second Episcopal Districts 1986 mid year conference, Rev. Gray was sent to Saint Stephens A.M.E. Church. At that time, Mount Calvary received its first woman minister, Rev. Ann Farrar Lightner .Since Rev. Doctor Lightner-Fuller began her pastorship at Mt. Calvary, our church has grown spiritually, physically, and economically. As our congregation grew under her leadership, she implemented the radio broadcast ministry and an additional Sunday worship service (8 a.m. service) which began on September 6, 1992. While ministering at Mt. Calvary, she has earned her doctorate in ministry. With the use of her doctorate degree, she has successfully implemented three distinctly different mentoring programs (one for women, men, and youth). In addition, she has been instrumental in expanding our churchs outreach, economic development and stewardship commitments. Her God given gift to develop, organize and deliver sermons has earned her recognition in Ebony magazine as one of the nations greatest black women preachers.In 1991, Rev. Lightner shared her vision to build a new Mount Calvary Sanctuary and education building with the congregation. From the moment of unveiling the vision to the congregation up to today, she has diligently and faithfully led the congregation through the peaks and valleys. Under her leadership, we have acquired the additional land needed, obtained the various Baltimore County variances, and secured the mortgage to build our new sanctuary. Pastor Fuller has personally overseen the construction, and furnishing of our new building.Our present sanctuary could not have been built, however, without the additional assistance of the Metro Housing Corporation (under the direction of Mr. Francis Inglehart, the late Dr. Eugene Byrd), Albert Ruebling and Associates, Baltimore County Government, H & R Consultants, Nations bank, Veronica Reaves, the trustees, stewards, members, and friends of Mount Calvary.

Family Life Center - opening 2012

The body of believers known as Mount Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church has been worshipping and serving the people of God since the mid 1850s. It currently has over 1,500 members under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Ann Lightner-Fuller. The Church seeks to build and operate the Mount Calvary Family Life Center. The Family Life Center will provide space for the multiple ministries and church administration needs of the Mount Calvary family and the needs of individuals beyond our church walls. Mount Calvary A.M.E Family Life Center meeting the needs of the church and community through:· Youth Programming· Counseling Services· Adult Day Programs· Life Skills Workshops· Career Placement ProgramsIn addition, the Family Life Center will provide opportunities for reaching the unsaved for Christ; developing disciples for Christ; meeting the holistic needs of individuals; for Mount Calvary to become the hub of the community and an international model of ministry.

Rev. Dr. Ann Lightner-Fuller

The Reverend Dr. Ann F. Lightner-Fuller is the esteemed pastor of the Mt. Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church in Towson, Maryland. A native of Raleigh North Carolina, her pastoral ministry began in April 1983 following her ordination as an itinerant Deacon. Rev. Lightner Fuller preached her initial sermon in 1981 at Bethel A.M.E. Church (Baltimore, MD) under the pastorate of her father in the ministry now Bishop John R. Bryant. In twenty-six (26) years of ministry she has served in both rural and urban settings.Since her appointment to Mt. Calvary the membership has grown from150 to 2001. Under her spiritual leadership the members of Mt. Calvary liquidated a one million dollar mortgage in just five years. In September of 2003, Rev. Lightner-Fuller and her congregation purchased property adjacent to the church to construct an Education and Family Life Center. This facility will house numerous programs aimed at strengthening families and making Mt. Calvary the hub of the Towson community.Rev. Lightner-Fuller currently serves as a member of the Baltimore Annual Conference Board of Examiners, a Conference Trustee, and as the Second Episcopal District Treasurer for General Conference Sustentation. In July of 2004, during the 47th Session of the African Methodist Episcopal General Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was appointed to serve on the General Board of the A.M.E. Church. God continues to call Rev. Lightner-Fuller to a higher level of service within the African Methodist Episcopal Church and around the world. In February 2006, Pastor Fuller was selected to represent the A.M.E. Church at the World Council of Churches in Brazil.Pastor Lightner-Fuller is a woman of many firsts. She served as the first coordinator of Women in Ministry for the Second Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church, she was the first woman to preach the Annual Sermon in the historic Baltimore Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1990, she was elected the first woman to serve as president of the Baltimore A.M.E.Ministerial Alliance, in 1992,and she was the first woman to preach at the Morning Worship Service at the historic Hampton University Ministers Conference, in 1996. Rev. Lightner-Fuller received a Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship to attend Boston University, where she received her undergraduate degree in communications. She holds a Masters in Theology from St. Marys Seminary, the Ecumenical Institute, Baltimore, Maryland. She received her Doctorate of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where, as a Dr. Jeremiah Wright/Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu Scholar, she focused on Afrocentric Preaching and Pastoring. She has done further study at Harvard University.Rev. Lightner-Fuller is the author of two books, And Your Daughters Shall Preach: Developing a Female Mentoring Program for the African American Church, and Desperate People: Sermons for Times Like These. Her sermons have also been featured in the African American Pulpit, the AME Reviewer, and several other publications.Rev. Lightner-Fuller is married to Reverend Stanley Fuller, former pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Together, the Fullers have four children, one daughter-in-law, and three granddaughters, Aliyah Brooke, Lawren Victoria and Laila.Rev. Lightner-Fuller proclaims the joy of the Lord as her strength and loves being in the service of the Lord. She confesses that her life had no real meaning or direction before accepting Christ as her personal Savior. Now, He has made something beautiful out of her life.

Rev. Dr. Stanley Fuller
Dr. Stanley Fuller is a third generation minister and the Executive Minister at Mount Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church in Towson, Maryland. Prior to his position at Mt. Calvary he was the pastor of the Historic Grace Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Reverend Fullers father in the gospel ministry is the late Dr. Nathaniel Tyler-Lloyd of Trinity Baptist Church in New York City. His pastor in the gospel ministry is Dr. James J. Fuller of New Hope Baptist Church.Dr. Fuller has held several secular positions that have gained him national attention. Most recently he was the Director of Baltimore Citys Eastside Career Center. He also was the State of Marylands Administrator for Fatherhood Initiatives and served as the Deputy Director of the Healthy Start Program. Dr. Fuller is a founding member of the African American Fatherhood Collective and has designed programs for the entire family in addition to writing two curriculums for national use. He has appeared on television and radio broadcasts to discuss issues such as African American men, youth violence, parenting, adolescent parenting, economic development, and other issues facing the African American community. He is a Fellow and a distinguished graduate of the Graduate Theological Foundation, Oxford University (England) where he received his doctorate of ministry degree. Reverend Fuller focused on pastoral theology with an emphasis on excellence in ministry and congregational transformation. He received a Masters of Theology from the Ecumenical Institute at St. Marys Seminary in Maryland and his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.Reverend Fuller is married to Reverend Dr. Ann Lightner-Fuller and together they have four children and four grandchildren.

As you approach the church you will see the signs for parking at the Cranston building.There is limited parking on church grounds and if you arrive early you will be guided to those spaces. We want you here to worship! NEW GUEST: WHAT TO EXPECT AS A FIRST TIME VISITOR!We want to make sure you feel welcome and simply enjoy yourself during services! We will ask visitors, who feel comfortable, to please stand and give name and church home (if they have one), as we officially welcome you. You will begin to feel the love of Mt. Calvary. Now is the time to greet, hug and enjoy as our choir sings the Mt. Calvary Welcome song to you. We must ask ourselves a few questions:Are these commandments still relevant?What is the purpose of these commands?What was God saying then and what is he saying now? I firmly believe that the first command that God gives Moses for his people really gives us a clue as to the purpose of God. He says you shall have no other god before me!LocationGod delivers these commands to Moses on Mt. Sinai just a few days after they had left Egypt. I believe that the timing and location of this delivery is important. Notice they had been in Israel for 400 years and God did not give them a set of rules to live by.Key Thought: Before God can reveal great things to us he has to get us in the right setting.They are in the desert.Key Thought: Gods ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts! The message: Relationship, all of the commands really speak of our relationship with God, family and our neighbors. This is our recipe for how we ought to interact with each other. We have as a people managed to build, create, manufacture all kinds of machines and mechanisms but we still lack in one area, relationships! God gives them this message not in Egypt but in the wilderness! Sometimes we hear God when we are in a deserted place.The command that he gives first is the priority of Him in our lives. Before our children, parents, neighbors and even property God says I must be number 1.Proverbs 3:6. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your pathsMatthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Exodus 20:3 the first commandment is concerning the object of our worship, God, and him only, Thou shall have no other gods before me - The Egyptians, and other neighboring nations, had many gods, creatures of their own fancy. This law was pre - fixed because of that transgression; and Jehovah being the God of Israel, they must entirely cleave to him, and no other, either of their own invention, or borrowed from their neighbors. The sin against this commandment, which we are most in danger of, is giving that glory to any creature which is due to God only. Pride makes a god of ourselvesCovetousness makes a god of moneySensuality makes a god of the bellyHuman knowledge can make a god of educationWhatever is loved, feared, delighted in, or depended on, more than God that we make a god of. This prohibition includes a idea, practice, which is the foundation of the whole law, that we take the Lord for our God, accept him for ours, adore him with humble reverence, and set our affections entirely upon him. There is a reason intimated in the last words before me. It intimates that we cannot have any other god but he will know it. That it is a sin that dares him to his face, which he cannot, will not, overlook.The point behind this commandment is this, God says I am first! I am before your family, finances, friends and even your future plans.Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in the heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water beneath the earth: thou shall never bow down or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and forth generations of then that hate me; and showing mercy to thousands that love me and keep my commandments.AS WE EXAMINE THIS TEXT THE FIRST QUESTION IS THIS;Why does God come down so hard on idolatry?What is an idol god or graven image?The next question is why would anyone make an idol god?Here are some of the obvious problems with idols:We want a serviceable God. A user friendly God. A God without exclusions but a lot of inclusions: Can you explain this?The language sounds to restrictive and harsh: What I saw on television last night (do you) God says my ways are not your ways (Isaiah 55:8-9)God has standards!Living among ignorant people is dangerous, (Amari Barakra) what do I mean by this statement and what does it have to do with idol gods? Be in the world but not of the world.Idols are restrictive: God is Spirit and they that worship must worship him in Spirit and in truth: (John 4;24) They reduce the infinite to the finiteIdols are addictive: they spread and cause trouble for the next generationIdols are manageable: God becomes our delivery agentWe are in control of him: We can command God to do what we say: We make claims on God but he can make none on us. It is easy to leave this god and go after another one; adulteryIdols make us smaller; we become like them. On the Mount
HOPE for Today and Tomorrow...... As we begin this Advent season, we start with a focus on HOPE. As I reflected on HOPE, I was reminded of the scriptures in Lamentations 3:22-24, that says the unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will HOPE in him!" (NASB). Those scriptures always give me a feeling of peace and HOPE! As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior, and as many of us will get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Holidays along with other challenges of life, always remember that no matter what you may have going on during this season, we can have HOPE in a Savior whose love never ends and never fails for today and for tomorrow. Each day, we can have HOPE that we will have new mercies that are unfailing, allowing us to be all that we can be in the Kingdom. Rest on the fact that you can always have HOPE in that God will continue to be faithful and provide for you no matter what! My brothers and sisters, be HOPEFUL! Because Jesus was born, we can be HOPEFUL; because Jesus lived, we can be HOPEFUL; because Jesus died on the cross for our sins, we have hope for today as well as for tomorrow. So no matter what you are going through during this Season, be hopeful and know that God will see you through. Know that every day is a new day and a new beginning. As the psalmist wrote, Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto me! "Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles" (Samuel Smiles).God Bless You as you keep HOPE alive! Minister Brian Faulcon

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead; and buried. On the third day He arose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: from hence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the church universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen!

Since the beginning of time God has used people to accomplish great things. There has been a call and response from God to Gods people. Prophets like Abraham, Samuel and Isaiah answered Gods call with Here am I. In Hebrew the word is hineni, (here am I) also translated as ready. Genesis 16:8MISSIONThe 20 Something Female Mentoring Group is comprised of female members of Mt. Calvary AME Church, between the ages of 20-29, who are determined to pour into the lives of one another and other young women through the fellowship and sharing of individual life experiences and encouraging each other in the Lord. The Twenty Something ministry was created by Pastor Fuller to mentor and guide young ladies in their twenties in their goals and endeavors. In our Footloose and Fancy Free Fellowships we come together to build up each other as sisters. Are we our Sisters' keeper? Yes we are! We are here to strengthen and encourage one another in our life building skills as young women. Annual ObjectivesThe ministry proposes to deveop and/or participate in the following activities:20 Something Boot CampAn exercise segment, led by Sis. April Tibbs, which will be held the first Saturday of every month from June -– September to promote physical health and health awareness for members. Tamar'’s Home 4 Teen Moms – A volunteer opportunity for the ministry to serve as hostesses, and in any other capacity requested, at event raising funds for an organization dedicated to assisting teenage mothers.Group Home OutreachA volunteer opportunity allowing the ministry to meet the needs of female adolescents, of varying backgrounds, currently residing in group homes to serve as a light and example to troubled young women. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and prayerfully saving those who are unsaved. Currently, the general body holds bi-monthly meetings in the church fellowship hall on select Saturday mornings from 9am to 12 noon or on select Friday evenings at other locations.
